A locked phone means that it can only be used with a SIM card from the carrier that originally sold the phone. If you originally purchased your device coupled with a plan from a carrier, it's likely locked to that carrier.
To use the AOW service, your phone must be unlocked - but if your phone is locked, you still have options:
Find an unlocking service
For most phones, you can use a third-party unlocking service to unlock your phone. Independent mobile phone stores and online services are the most commonly used unlocking services.
When you use an online unlocking service, you send them your device IMEI (like a unique barcode for your phone) and they will send you back the unlock code and instructions. A service we recommend for instant online unlocking is doctorSIM. We've partnered with DoctorSIM to offer all AOW customers a special offer.
If you prefer to have your phone unlocked in person, visit a local cell phone repair shop. Many offer unlocking services for most phones, but it’s always a good idea to call ahead to make sure they can unlock your specific make and model.
Contact your current wireless provider
Your mobile provider will unlock your phone for a small fee. Certain conditions may apply. Contact them and ask for a phone unlock.
Note: If you purchased your unlocked phone from a department or wholesale store, it's possible that it is unlocked at purchase; however, if the first SIM you inserted into this phone was your carrier SIM, it is likely that your phone locked to this carrier. In the event that this happens, you can either contact the original point of purchase to see if they will unlock your phone at no cost, or go with a third party unlocking service.
